Add Review/CommentThe two recent San Diego State graduates will present their current body of work in the Metal Museum Library.
The National Ornamental Metal Museum is pleased to present Tributaries III: Exterior/Ulterior, featuring the work of Jeffrey Clancy and David Clemons, June 28 – August 24, 2008.
Jeffrey Clancy is Assistant Professor in Metalsmithing and Jewelry at the Maine College of Art, Portland, ME. He received his M.F.A. in Metalsmithing and Jewelry at San Diego State University, San Diego, CA. His work is a cultivation of his interest in the contemporary craft object and the connections that are specific to craft. The work is firmly secured in the historical lineage to past makers, formats, materials, and workmanship. Currently his work explores the relationship and/or space between progress and regress and his mobility within this bifurcation. This space is explored through historical utilitarian and decorative metalwares.
Born in El Paso, TX, David Clemons graduated with a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin and received his MFA in Metalsmithing from San Diego State University in 2007. Graduate study afforded Clemons a unique opportunity to simultaneously entrench himself in metalsmithing techniques and history and use the resulting objects as vehicles to discuss his identity as a Black man. Clemons utilizes metal and other media to create objects as catalyst to discuss the development of racial identity and the impact mass media has on its development. His is currently continuing to explore identity-based work but is concurrently investigating works driven by the use of unconventional materials and process exploration.
