Austin musician Billy Harvey bought a gold 1981 Mercedes diesel on Ebay in 14 seconds. Now the unconventional environmentally-friendly singer/songwriter is taking it on a tour across America, with a plan to travel all 7,876 miles on waste vegetable oil. Those who know Harvey might not be surprised by the impulsive purchase, but after meeting a friend who converted a car of the same make and model to run on vegetable oil waste, Harvey was inspired to take a step toward a more environmentally-conscious ride. "I had been hearing about this for a while and wasn't really sure how it could work, but come to find out, it works amazingly well. I like the idea of not being wasteful. I always cleaned my plate as a kid and I guess this is just another of those plate-cleaning efforts." At home, Harvey has a few businesses that supply him with the fuel necessary to get from place to place. He says it benefits all involved. The restaurants no longer have to pay to dispose of the oil, the car uses the oil by burning it off and reducing harmful emissions by 80 percent, and lastly that waste oil will no longer be dumped in to the ground water. Now the test will be to see if he can cross the country with the same ease he travels Austin. His main concern is finding enough establishments that will allow him to essentially take away their trash. Surprisingly people are protective over even their garbage. It's fitting that the green car is making its debut trip in support of Harvey's fourth full-length album, titled "Grow Garden Grow". The two-disc, 28-song effort was written, produced and released by Harvey. "The green theme was to enforce the organic nature of this body of work, and the creative process in general which happens all around us and in spite of us." The record was born out of a songwriting game that Harvey regularly plays with friends and fellow musicians (Bob Schneider, Steve Poltz, Jason Mraz, Matt the Electrician). Once one of the participants picks a title, each member of the group then separately writes songs using that title. "Grow Garden Grow" is a collection of Harvey's favorite recordings over the last few years of participating in this songwriting game. Billy Harvey will be playing in Memphis at Java Cabana on Sunday, February 3 at 7:30pm. He will be fueling up at Asian Grill in Germantown, TN.
