Recently discovered in the archives of the permanent art collection at Indiana State University, the holiday greeting cards were originally produced in 1935 as a demonstration set for publication by the Federal Arts Project. The FAP was an important part of the Works Projects Administration. The WPA attempted to get Americans back to work by hiring them for government-sponsored public projects. The original cards feature the works of such outstanding artists such as Rockwell Kent, Jose Orozco, Reginald Marsh, Diego Rivera and John Steuart Curry. A wide slice of American imagery is featured in this collection, and various traditional printmaking methods are highlighted. Never published, each card is signed in pencil by the artist, and carries the WPA stamp or watermark
