Library Panel
March 25, 2008
In continuation of their 10th Anniversary celebration, the UrbanArt Commission has installed a new exhibition in the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library. Interactions/Interruptions: 10 Years of Public Art in Public Libraries displays the drawings and models for many of the public art projects that have been installed in libraries around the city. Featured artists include Jill Turman, Iris Harkavy, Pinkney Herbert, and Lester Merriweather to name a few. The first and still one of the largest projects for the UrbanArt Commission was the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, started in 1997, and since then the organization has given rise to multiple public art projects in various Memphis libraries. The exhibition in the Central Library’s Goodwyn gallery, set to be on view until Monday, March 31st, explores many of these projects, displaying their preliminary sketches, drawings, and models. Furthermore, on Tuesday, March 25th at 5:30 PM, the Central Library will host a panel discussion about the library as the UAC’s first project. The panel will include former executive director Carissa Hussong, artist Jeane Umbreit, and others. The program includes a slide presentation of the artwork at the Central Library, plus discussion of how the project started and how it spurred the development of the UAC, how the artists were selected, and what it was like for artists to work with architects for the first time. Interactions/Interruptions was made possible through the generous support of the following organizations and individuals: First Tennessee Bravo Award, Hyde Family Foundations, National Endowment for the Arts, Deupree Family Foundation, Waddell & Associates, Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Goodman, Scott and Carolyn Heppel, and Mrs. Sandy Goldstein; with additional support from Memphis College of Art, ArtsMemphis, the Tennessee Arts Commission and Clear Channel; and special thanks to the Memphis Area Transit Authority, City of Memphis Division of Park Services, Memphis Public Library and Information Center, the Riverfront Development Corporation, Archer Malmo and the South Main Association. The UrbanArt Commission was formed in 1998 to create a dynamic, nurturing, vibrant community through art and design. What began as a small program incubated within ArtsMemphis has grown into a successful nonprofit that has overseen the completion of over $6 million in art enhancements.
