Jazz Legend Returns! America’s smoothest scat, jazz and pop-singing virtuoso Al Jarreau returns to Memphis on Friday, June 6 for an incredibly engaging live performance of love songs, “An Evening with Al Jarreau,” at the Orpheum Theatre.

CDFM, in partnership with Memphis City Schools, is improving the quality of arts education in the Memphis City School system by providing continual professional development workshops for educators. While visiting Memphis, Al Jarreau will demonstrate his commitment to education by leading a very special workshop and voice master class for educators and students attending the Echoes of Truth Summer Camp. The workshop will take place on Thursday, June 5 at Overton High School. Mr. Jarreau will share his perspective on how educators can create a learning environment steeped in the arts by connecting topics in art to traditional subjects such as math, history, social studies and language arts. The fee is waive for the first 100 educators and individuals can register at 901-416-3434.

Known around the world for its blues and rock and roll, Memphis has a recognizable special vibe. ArtsMemphis exists to nurture this unique character and to magnify the city’s creative voice. We are a 45-year-old arts funding organization (the sixth largest in the United States), which provides annual operating and project support to 23 arts groups and administers some 150 additional grants on a year to year basis. The ArtsMemphis tagline is “your support matters” and indeed it does. As major fundraisers, grant-makers and arts promoters in the city, ArtsMemphis contributed more than $4 million to the Memphis arts community in 2007, and it is a fact that 95 cents of every dollar raised in our annual campaign is directed to our funded organizations. ArtsMemphis builds partnerships among artists, arts groups, donors, educators and culture lovers throughout the city and region. Recognizing that a lively arts scene has a major economic impact and is essential to the quality of life in Memphis, ArtsMemphis is encouraging the entire community to interact with the arts like never before. The current enhanced website with its expanded calendar of events has been introduced with that goal in mind.
