Gabor Peterdi (1915-2001) interprets each of John Ciardi's (1916-1986) fifteen poems in A Genesis: Fifteen Poems and Etchings--with etched lines and textural aquatint passages, where the inking and wiping of the plate are as integral as the etching process itself. The images "some more literal, others more abstract" reflect the artists' deep connection to nature as well as their response to the words of Ciardi's poems. The poet's A Genesis was completed in 1967 while Peterdi was a professor at Yale, at which point he was nationally recognized as a distinguished master-printmaker, training a new generation of artists. Drawing upon the experience he had acquired there, Peterdi set up graphic studios and taught printmaking at a number of institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, Hunter College, and finally at Yale University. One critic noted that "man, nature and their inter-relationships" were themes that had dominated Peterdi's "creative energies" throughout much of his lifetime. This aspect of Peterdi's work makes it well-suited to the poems of A Genesis, wherein writer Ciardi reflects upon the universe as revealed in nature.
