"Death and the Maiden" focuses on a woman, Paulina, who was held as a political prisoner 15 years ago. Since then she has become almost house-bound. While being held prisoner she was tortured and brutalized and during that time she never saw her tormentors. On this particular day her husband, having had car trouble, brings home the good Samaritan who helped him. Paulina believes she recognizes this man's voice as the main torturer from years past. She restrains him and proceeds to try to get a confession from him for his deeds. The intense play addresses many of the issues and dilemmas America is struggling with at this time: citizens rights, torture, government control, truth and lies.
