Memphis, TN – The UrbanArt Commission is working with the University of Memphis Art Department and the University Neighborhoods Development Corporation (“UNDC”) to implement a collaborative, community-building public art project in the University District.

Initial installations are already underway, with one billboard posted (see attached image) and one mural partially completed (see attached image).

There will be a meeting at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church located at 480 S. Highland on Saturday, July 26th from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to gather input from community members, which will be used to inspire further public art in the University District.

The project involves a community driven series of highly visible public art in the University District which is designed to create a special sense of place and identity. The collaborative team of neighborhood associations, artists and other neighborhood stakeholders will develop a series of murals, banners, billboards, and other public art projects over the next eighteen (18) months that artistically express the identity of the University District and help to strengthen a sense of place and pride in the community. Follow-up phases of the project will include community art classes for youth and the establishment of a “Community Art Center”
    for the University District.

The project is funded in part by the “Strengthening Communities” fund, a joint program of the University of Memphis, the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis and the United Way of the Mid-South. The project is managed by the UNDC and the University of Memphis Art Department, with advisory support provided by the UrbanArt Commission.
