Martha Graham was a pioneering, revolutionary dancer who was
not afraid to take creative risks or express her art in any way she desired.
In Martha Graham: An American Original, Graham dances in three of her most famed performances; A Dancer's World, Night Journey and Appalachian Spring.
The movie also features interviews of Graham from her dressing room and work in the studio followed by a question and answer session with a Graham artist regarding Martha's contribution to American culture.

The Lausanne Young Writers Symposium, now entering its eighth year, is a free one-day event for public and private school students and teachers. In 2007, approximately 200 students and 16 teachers from 17 schools attended. The work of many of those students is gathered in Our symposium publication, Olla Podrida.
Lausanne's Department of English created the symposium in order to provide students from around the area the opportunity to join a community of writers. It is the only non-competitive writing conference in Memphis and is open to students from multiple schools, invites professional writers to work with students and provides the opportunity for teachers to gather specifically to share ideas and strategies for writing in the classroom. We hope that every individual who attends the event, including students, teachers and guest writers and speakers, will leave our campus feeling inspired by and connected to other writers.

On January 25, 2008, Rhodes College will host a symposium on "Macbeth" in conjunction with local Memphis productions of Shakespeare's play by Hattiloo Theatre and Verdi's opera by Opera Memphis.

"Shakespeare in Color: A Symposium on African-American Performances and Appropriations of 'Macbeth'" will draw together national scholars as well as local artists in a conversation about so-called 'non-traditional' casting of Shakespeare's plays.

Invited speakers include: Ayanna Thompson (Arizona State University), Peter Erickson (Williams College), Amy Scott-Douglass (Denison University), Marguerite Rippy (Marymount University), and opera scholar Wallace Cheatham. Also, we have two new speakers to add to the line-up (following Wallace Cheatham): film director Aleta Chappelle, and veteran Hollywood and Broadway actor Harry J. Lennix.

There will also be roundtable discussions with performers and directors from the Opera Memphis and Hattiloo productions.

This all-day event will present an opportunity to revisit the historical, theoretical, and practical implications of 'colorblind' casting in anticipation of attending these productions.

All lectures and discussions will take place in Blount Auditorium, Buckman Hall; the event is free and open to the public.

Please contact Scott Newstok (newstoks@rhodes.edu) for further information.

This symposium is sponsored by the Rhodes College Center for Outreach in the Development in the Arts (CODA).

Exhibition by Grier Edmundson of works done in Memphis and Scotland. At Power House.

Native Memphian Grier Edmundson's paintings evolved after returning to Memphis in 2003 having been away for six years. Reacting to his shifted perspective, the paintings he made in the two years following his return reflect his attempt to create a southern identity through a composite of ideals and images. Influenced by the writing of Flannery O'Conner, Jorge Louis Borges and William Faulkner, these intimate paintings are a collection of moments that simultaneously dwell on the subtle beauty of the south and examine its flaws and injustices.

Further details about the symposium will be posted on the Rhodes website as they become available: http://cal.rhodes.edu/cal_event.php?id=125997

In conjuction with UAC's "Interactions/Interruptions" 10 years of Public Art.
"Mural Project"
Anthony Lee is a young African American artist whose previous work includes elements of drawing, painting and collage. Anthony attended Central High School, has exhibited at the Brooks Museum of Art and has been selected by the UrbanArt Commission to create a public artwork for Pierotti Park, a City of Memphis Parks Division project that is currently in the design process. Anthony’s project for our 10th Anniversary is to enhance a large wall on South Main Street with brightly colored vinyl decals to visually enhance what is currently the vast blank wall of the train station. Entitled "Modern Hieroglyphs", this project helps to take symbols from our everyday lives and present them in a public space to force the viewer to question the symbols' meanings and design when taken out of their quotidian context.

Written on the Wall, an Installation by Jennifer Angus, is a large-scale installation of words composed of real and exotic insects pricked to the gallery walls. The result is an incredible display in which Angus toys with such emotions as wonder and fear, the patterns of letters and words alluding to children’s literature that is superficially innocent, but upon closer consideration, quite terrible.

The artist will lecture Wednesday, March 5 at 8 pm in Callicott Auditorium, Rust Hall, Memphis College of Art

You are what you eat…so you’d better start paying attention to what exactly that is. These films provide a refreshing education on the current state of agriculture, and point out positive sustainable and organic practices that you can take part in. Includes "Ladies of the Land", Academy Award Winner for Best Student Documentary. The "Meatrix" and "Frankensteer" expose the ways of unethical farming, while others provide us with role models through CSAs, Cuban community, sustainable lemon farms, organic choices, and a new wave of female farmers leading the way.

The Choir of the Germantown Friends School will perform at Independent Presbyterian Church, 4738 Walnut Grove Road, Memphis, Tennessee. The event is free and open to the public.

The concert program will include Jeffrey Van’s A Procession Winding Around Me—a setting of Walt Whitman’s Civil War poems for choir and classical guitar, Mungu Ni Pendo for choir and African drummers, excerpts of the Mozart Requiem, Jeffrey Ames’ In Remembrance, several gospel selections, and folk songs from around the world.

The Germantown Friends School Choir is a 50 voice ensemble selected by audition under the direction of Stephen Kushner. In recent years, the Choir has undertaken concert tours to China, Denmark, Poland and the Czech Republic, and has collaborated with many Philadelphia musicians, most recently with pianist Ignat Solzhenitsyn.

The concert is part of a five-city tour that includes concerts in Atlanta, Birmingham, Sewanee and Memphis, and concludes with an extended stay in New Orleans where, in addition to singing a concert, the Choir will participate in a project with Habitat for Humanity, helping to rebuild homes that were destroyed in hurricane Katrina.

Germantown Friends School is an independent Quaker school founded in 1845 on the belief that “there is that of God in everyone.” The school enrolls approximately 900 students in kindergarten through twelfth grades from the greater Philadelphia area.

Travel back in time for a day and explore the wonders of ancient Egypt during the Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology’s Ancient Egyptian Family Day at the Art Museum of the University of Memphis on Saturday, February 23, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Family Day is designed to introduce children to the art and culture of ancient Egypt. Kids can learn how to write their name in hieroglyphs, draw like an Egyptian, design an ancient Egyptian amulet, color a mask while learning about ancient Egyptian gods, take a special tour of the Egyptian exhibition at the Art Museum, and listen to stories from ancient Egypt.

The popular "School for Scribes" will be available again this year. In an intensive one-hour workshop, children and adults will learn about the ancient Egyptian language. A special session devoted to the rediscovery of ancient Egyptian language and the Rosetta Stone will also be available.

For more information visit www.memphis.edu/egypt. To sign up for the popular “School of Scribes” call 901-678-2649.

The Third Annual Art Education Exhibition held in collaboration with the University of Memphis’ Art Department and local K-12 teachers, opens at the U of M's Jones Hall Gallery on February 22.
“The exhibit is a way to honor our art education Alumni,” says Donalyn Heise, assistant professor of art education and art program coordinator at the University of Memphis.
The exhibit extends into the community, encouraging art teachers to exhibit their work, but also select the work of one of their students to be exhibited. The exhibit focuses on comprehensive art education and marks the beginning of Youth Art Month, an annual observance each March that emphasizes the value of art education for all children and encourages support for quality school art programs. Juror for this year’s exhibition is Kristin Congdon.

An opening reception for the exhibition will be held in the lobby of Jones Hall Gallery on February 22 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Art Museum of the University of Memphis (AMUM) and New York based artist Anne Beffel invite you to experience "Sitting Still: Contemplation and Creation, Anne Beffel and Students from the University of Memphis and Syracuse University." The event is free and open to the public. "Sitting Still" allows the audience to discover different perspectives through the simple act of sitting still and observing videos of daily scenes, ranging from those that inspire awe to those that compel to participate and intervene. It uses fast-paced new media communication forms such as video and Web sites with an emphasis on slowing down. "he great thing about these videos is that they can be shared with others,"? Beffel says. "My hope is that one person at a time we will build a more contemplative, connected culture, a peaceful alternative to conflict. This is a contemporary version of pen pals, using technology to share scenes from our lives.? Beffel works to reverse the common chaos of everyday life into a method that will inspire people to stop, look, listen, and chronicle their worlds as they unfold?. She drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including her interest in the Dali Lama and Rosa Parks. Although both individuals come from very different environments and positions, they have drawn strength and courage from stillness, which has impacted the world in profound ways. "This February marks the 48th anniversary of the sit-ins of Ronald Martin, Robert Patterson, and Mark Martin at a F.W. Woolworth luncheon counter in Greensboro, N.C., and of the Nashville sit-ins that lasted through May 1960,"? Beffel says. "Those were all non-violent and contemplative attempts to overcome differences, in this case to end racial segregation."

David Sánchez, 2005 Latin Grammy winning jazz tenor saxophonist, will hold a master class at Harris Concert Hall on Saturday, March 1 at 1 p.m. Originally from Puerto Rico, Sánchez started playing percussion and drums at age eight and took up the tenor saxophone four years later. His influences were Afro-Caribbean and Danza, but also European and Latin classical. He attended La Escuela Libre de Música in San Juan, which focused on formal musical studies. When his sister brought home several jazz records, including recordings of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Dexter Gordon, Sánchez was mesmerized by the music and became interested in jazz. In 1986 Sánchez enrolled at the Universidad de Puerto Rico in Rio Píedras with the intention to pursue a degree in psychology. However the temptation to move to New York City was irresistible, and by 1988, Sánchez had won a music scholarship to Rutgers University in New Jersey. Because of Rutgers’ close proximity to New York City, Sánchez quickly became a member of New York’s jazz scene. He played with pianist Eddie Palmieri and trumpeter Claudio Roditi, among others, and joined Dizzy Gillespie’s “Live the Future” tour, featuring Miriam Makeba, in 1991. Gillespie became one of Sánchez big mentors and influences.

Tim Kinard’s most recent work is a figuratively based carnival extravaganza that attempts to relate the daily human experience to the staging and limelight of a circus. He uses family friends and past experiences to drive his ideas. Poised in action and made of Styrofoam and paper, these life-size performers realize more than aerial acrobatics and high wire stunts. These human curiosities illustrate the world as he believes it is: a circus. Melissa Rackham’s images are about place. They explore her personal and our collective search for the place where we belong. Rackham, a self-proclaimed habitual mover, has a great interest in place and is intrigued by the quest to find a place that feels like home. Her images convey her own experience within a location and offer the viewer a sense of mood through unusual compositions, unexpected juxtapositions, and innuendoes. She often utilizes an archetype of childhood in the form of her own stuffed bunny to present both a literal connection to her past and a symbolic remnant of childhood. Though her images are of place, they are also about loss, fear, regret, and the passing of time.
