ArtsMemphis' Bravo Memphis program has been making the arts affordable and accessible to young professionals (21- to 40-something) for more than 15 years. This popular program was designed to introduce a younger audience to the region's rich arts offerings. Bravo Memphis is committed to expanding cultural horizons and cultivating tomorrow's arts patrons today.

In a world of diversity and tradition, Ballet Memphis is celebrating a choreographic response to some of the great world's religion and religious music. The performance will include Trey Mcintyre's Grace- a piece set to gospel music, Julia Adam's work set to ancient Jewish choral music, and a choreographer to be announced honoring pieces specific to the Muslim world. All of the pieces will be gathered gathered together in the spirit of respect, joy, and wonder at the different manifestations of holiness in the world.

Ladies get your friends together for a splendid girl's night out featuring one of romance's favorite authors, Jane Austen.( Gents, don't fret you're invited to join in for this romance classic too.) The hugely poplar novel comes to life in this refreshingly fast pace and engaging new adaptation. Finding a husband is hardly Elizabeth Bennett's most urgent priority. But with four sisters, and an overzealous matchmaking mother, and a string of unsuitable suitors, it's difficult to escape the subject. When the independent minded Elizabeth meets the handsome, enigmatic Mr. Darcy she is determined not to let her feelings triumph over her own good sense.

The Memphis Rock 'n' Soul museum's exhibition about the birth of rock and soul music, created by the Smithsonian Institution, tells the story of musical pioneers who, for the love of music, overcame racial and socio-economic barriers to create music that shook the entire world. Your first stop to exploring all the sounds that came together to make Memphis the epi-center of popular music, the Rock 'n' Soul museum also has the distinction of being the only Smithsonian museum located outside of our nation's capital.

Steve Martin has delighted the world with his comedic performance and pen. Join us for the regional debut of The Underpants, a wild satire adapted from the classical German play about Louise and Theo Maske, a couple whose conservative existence is shattered when Louise's bloomers fall down in public. Though she pulls them up quickly, Theo thinks the incident will cost him his job as a government clerk. Louise's momentary display does not result in the feared scandal but it does attract two infatuated men, each of whom wants to rent the spare room in the Maske's home. Oblivious of their amorous objectives, Theo splits the room between them, and comedy ensues.

We hope you will join us for a wonderful evening featuring live music, a silent auction of arts experiences, and a cocktail buffet. This exciting event continues to present ArtsMemphis with many new opportunities in terms of both support for and awareness of the arts in Memphis. We could not do this without the support of our generous sponsors and engaged committee members. Many, many thanks to those who have volunteered to serve on our steering committee and to Magna Bank, our 2008 Presenting Sponsor. 2008 Steering Committee Lucy Lee, chair Jonny Ballinger, Michelle Blount, Frank Langford, Dianne Mall, Pam McDonnell, and Harriet Snowden.

Calling all filmmakers in Crittenden, DeSoto, Fayette, Shelby or Tipton counties:

With a nod to the likes of American Idol and Dancing with the Stars, and to do our part for the thriving indie film scene in Memphis, ArtsMemphis hereby announces that we are sponsoring a web-based film contest for our budding local filmmakers. The award for first prize will be $2,000; second prize will be $750; and third prize, $500.

The contest will run from January 15 through February 29, 2008. You are invited to create a film which showcases a particular aspect of the lively Memphis arts scene. The specific subject matter is up to you, but the film must be only five minutes (or less) in length. Then officially register your film in a dedicated space on our website at www.artsmemphis.org for a nominal donation to ArtsMemphis of $15. Please note that you must be a resident of Crittenden, DeSoto, Fayette, Shelby or Tipton counties to enter the contest.

After the deadline, an expert panel will narrow the field down to what they consider to be the 15 best film entries. These will be announced on our website, at which point the public will view these films on-line and register their votes for the top five. The public will then be asked to vote one last time-- for their top three choices.

At the end of the contest, ArtsMemphis will host an awards ceremony and gala party at Malco's Studio on the Square to screen the top five films and, based on the peoples' choices, will announce the three prize-winning films.

Get out your cameras and enter this exciting film contest. You could be the big winner!

All of the art displayed in the ArtsMemphis east office relates to Memphis. There are several pieces that are historic and play to the impact Memphis arts has had on the world.

Artists featured include:

Bill Eggleston – Mississippi Native Eggleston has been called the "father of color photography" - although he did not of course invent it - and since the 1990s he is widely regarded as the leading and most influential color photographer of the 20th century.

William Christenberry - Since the early 1960s, William Christenberry has plumbed the regional identity of the American South, focusing his attention on Hale County, Alabama, from which he hails. Although Christenberry is most often associated with and recognized as a pioneer in the field of American color photography, his vision is multifaceted and rendered through an unorthodox mix of media that includes sculpture, drawing, painting, and found-object assemblage

Nancy Burson - Since the inception of her career as an artist, Nancy Burson has been interested in the interaction of art and science. In the early 80s, it was Burson who introduced “ morphing”, a computer program that was able to create facial composites. Later her method came to be used by police departments to find missing children by “morphing” their faces to account for age change. The human face, its morphology, and its underlying genetic code are recurring themes in almost all of Burson’s works Baby Elvis (1989-90), Burson takes on Andy Warhol by morphing Elvis back in time to depict him as a premature iconic baby. The work plays off cultural obsessions and wonders, with some amusement, to what extent fame is embedded in physical appearance – DNA as destiny?

The contemporary art displayed represents art that is a direct result of ArtsMemphis support to the arts community. Artists featured include:

Paul Graham – The British photographer created a series of work called American Night that was influenced by his trip to Memphis. Paul Graham’s photographs touch upon the social fracture of America—the great divide—between included and excluded, blacks and whites, have and have-not. It is a simple topic, shunned these days or only dealt with in clichéd photo-journalism. American Night embraces this neglected territory in a series of shocking images that lodge firmly in our consciousness as they negotiate the boundaries of art and document.. The title, American Night, refers to a technique in film making where day footage is shot in nighttime. Graham’s work has been in museums around the world; including the Tate Gallery in London.

Matt Ducklo – Ducklo is a graduate of Yale’s famed photography masters program. Matt Ducklo is a photographer who captures a moment that is usually staged but in reality is an unusual element of an American institution: from the presentation of the news in TV studios to a new series of works that explore the “Touch Tour” - blind people touching works of art in museums. In these new works his subject is the blind experiencing sculpture by touch. Looking at somebody experiencing something with a different sensibility, the photographs contemplate people, “in the act of seeing.” He has photographs from touch tours at the Metropolitan Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC. The pieces in the ArtsMemphis office were captured at the Brooks and Dixon Museums as part of a commission from The Power House.

Special thanks to James Patterson, who generously loaned and curated these significant works of art .

Conservation Through Art's celebration dinner in honor of Allen Morgan and Henry Morgan at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. 7pm cocktails in the Hughes Pavilion; Dinner at 8pm. Includes a live auction.
We are especially privileged to recognize this year’s CTA honorees Allen Morgan and Henry Morgan, two very dynamic men who have made amazing contributions to this city and to the efforts supported by CTA.

“Allen and Henry were chosen as this year’s honorees because they are both tremendous leaders in our community, both in business and civic endeavors,” says CTA Chair Billy Dunavant. “Both are active in supporting the arts and conservation. Even though I am older, I have grown up with them, Allen on the tennis court, and Henry in the outdoors hunting and fishing. They are truly an asset for Memphis and deserve this recognition.”
