Martha Graham was a pioneering, revolutionary dancer who was
not afraid to take creative risks or express her art in any way she desired.
In Martha Graham: An American Original, Graham dances in three of her most famed performances; A Dancer's World, Night Journey and Appalachian Spring.
The movie also features interviews of Graham from her dressing room and work in the studio followed by a question and answer session with a Graham artist regarding Martha's contribution to American culture.

Rotten Tomatoes Says...

"My Kid Could Paint That's colorful visuals, sharp editing, and open-ended conclusion makes it a doc you will talk about long after leaving the theater."

In this fascinating documentary, filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev chronicles the rise and fall of child artist Marla Olmstead, the daughter of a dental hygienist and factory worker from upstate New York. Marla was all of four years old when she sold her first abstract painting. When the New York Times published a piece about her prodigious talent, she became an overnight media sensation, and her paintings quickly began to sell for up to five figures. While many lauded her amazing ability--and even likened her to Picasso--her success also sparked heated debates about the true value of abstract art.

Bar-Lev begins to explore this idea, as well as our culture's fascination with child prodigies, when the film suddenly takes a sharp and unexpected turn. The impetus is a piece on 60 MINUTES in which Charlie Rose suggests that Marla may not in fact be the sole creator of her work, and that her father--himself an amateur painter--is really the mastermind. The Olmsteads are stunned by the implication, and Marla quickly falls from grace with the art world. What follows is an unsettling but nonetheless riveting examination of Marla's family. Bar-Lev suddenly finds himself in a bit of an ethical conundrum: while he would like to get at the truth for the sake of the film, he is hesitant to cause further trouble for the Olmsteads, who have granted him intimate access to their lives. He ultimately leaves it up to viewers to decide what really happened--though for many, there will likely be little doubt as to the authenticity of Marla's work. As a documentary, the film works beautifully, raising a lot of big questions about truth in art, and even about the exploitive nature of documentary film. All this because of a four-year-old girl and her paint set.

Throughout the 1970s and 80s Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band barnstormed America, rocking audiences all across the country. Many venues were, in fact, classic theaters from the Golden Age of vaudeville and picture shows. Bruce's fondness for these iconic movie palaces has led to his commitment to support community based theaters. Live In Barcelona captures Springsteen and the E Street Band at the peak of their form performing a dream set-list of new songs, classic hits, audience favorites, and seldom-heard rarities. Join us for this special 2002 concert performance recorded live in HD in Barcelona, Spain benefiting the Museum's film program.

Calling all filmmakers in Crittenden, DeSoto, Fayette, Shelby or Tipton counties:

With a nod to the likes of American Idol and Dancing with the Stars, and to do our part for the thriving indie film scene in Memphis, ArtsMemphis hereby announces that we are sponsoring a web-based film contest for our budding local filmmakers. The award for first prize will be $2,000; second prize will be $750; and third prize, $500.

The contest will run from January 15 through February 29, 2008. You are invited to create a film which showcases a particular aspect of the lively Memphis arts scene. The specific subject matter is up to you, but the film must be only five minutes (or less) in length. Then officially register your film in a dedicated space on our website at www.artsmemphis.org for a nominal donation to ArtsMemphis of $15. Please note that you must be a resident of Crittenden, DeSoto, Fayette, Shelby or Tipton counties to enter the contest.

After the deadline, an expert panel will narrow the field down to what they consider to be the 15 best film entries. These will be announced on our website, at which point the public will view these films on-line and register their votes for the top five. The public will then be asked to vote one last time-- for their top three choices.

At the end of the contest, ArtsMemphis will host an awards ceremony and gala party at Malco's Studio on the Square to screen the top five films and, based on the peoples' choices, will announce the three prize-winning films.

Get out your cameras and enter this exciting film contest. You could be the big winner!

The Brooks partners with AIGA Memphis, the professional association for design, to present Helvetica, a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. The film takes a look at the proliferation of one typeface as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type. Helvetica encompasses the worlds of design, advertising, psychology, and communication, and invites us to take a second look at the thousands of words we see every day.

You are what you eat…so you’d better start paying attention to what exactly that is. These films provide a refreshing education on the current state of agriculture, and point out positive sustainable and organic practices that you can take part in. Includes "Ladies of the Land", Academy Award Winner for Best Student Documentary. The "Meatrix" and "Frankensteer" expose the ways of unethical farming, while others provide us with role models through CSAs, Cuban community, sustainable lemon farms, organic choices, and a new wave of female farmers leading the way.

The Art Museum of the University of Memphis (AMUM) and New York based artist Anne Beffel invite you to experience "Sitting Still: Contemplation and Creation, Anne Beffel and Students from the University of Memphis and Syracuse University." The event is free and open to the public. "Sitting Still" allows the audience to discover different perspectives through the simple act of sitting still and observing videos of daily scenes, ranging from those that inspire awe to those that compel to participate and intervene. It uses fast-paced new media communication forms such as video and Web sites with an emphasis on slowing down. "he great thing about these videos is that they can be shared with others,"? Beffel says. "My hope is that one person at a time we will build a more contemplative, connected culture, a peaceful alternative to conflict. This is a contemporary version of pen pals, using technology to share scenes from our lives.? Beffel works to reverse the common chaos of everyday life into a method that will inspire people to stop, look, listen, and chronicle their worlds as they unfold?. She drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including her interest in the Dali Lama and Rosa Parks. Although both individuals come from very different environments and positions, they have drawn strength and courage from stillness, which has impacted the world in profound ways. "This February marks the 48th anniversary of the sit-ins of Ronald Martin, Robert Patterson, and Mark Martin at a F.W. Woolworth luncheon counter in Greensboro, N.C., and of the Nashville sit-ins that lasted through May 1960,"? Beffel says. "Those were all non-violent and contemplative attempts to overcome differences, in this case to end racial segregation."

The Dixon's new director, Kevin Sharp, loves the movies. He has seen his favorite films dozens of times. Because he is such a fan, Kevin will be creating his own favorite film festival over the next year. He has decided upon a chronological format for his series, starting in the 1930s with three movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema. Each film features two great stars and strong supporting casts, and each in their own way speaks to the peculiarly American response to the Great Depression and the advent of the modern era. Kevin will offer a short introduction to the film before each screening. March 20: Holiday, 1938 Starring: Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn Directed by: George Cukor A much too lightly regarded masterpiece 95 minutes Film begins at 7:00 pm and is included with Museum Admission.

The UrbanArt Commission, as part of their Arts Build Communities Grant through ArtsMemphis, is hosting a lecture and a screening of the documentary Third Ward, TX, produced by Memphis native Noland Walker. The screening will take place on Friday April 11 at 7:00 PM in the Memphis College of Art Callicott Auditorium, at 1930 Poplar Avenue in Overton Park. The documentary focuses on Project-Row Houses, a program founded by Houston artist Rick Lowe, which was established on the principle that art and the community creating it can "revitalize even the most depressed inner-city neighborhoods, for the mutual good of existing and future residents." The program was designed, therefore, to create a sense of community through art, culture, and history in the Houston, TX Third Ward neighborhood. With this mission in mind, Walker produced Third Ward, TX to tell the story of this Houston neighborhood's struggle, demise, and re-growth through the Project-Row Houses program. In celebration of the film, the UrbanArt Commission is hosting a screening, with producer Noland Walker in attendance to take questions after the film. In conjunction with this screening and to express the story, process, and future of the Project-Row Houses program in Third Ward, TX, director Rick Lowe will be giving a lecture on May 8th, also in the Callicott Auditorium, at 6:30 PM. The UAC was established in 1997 through the collaborative efforts of the Memphis Arts Council and the Shelby County Government. The mission of the UrbanArt Commission is to create a dynamic, vibrant, nurturing community through art and design. The UAC is funded in part by ArtsMemphis Arts, Tennessee Arts Commission and the Hyde Foundation.

Power House Memphis, 45 G.E. Patterson, between Main & Front Streets

In 1993, Baltimore filmmaker Skizz Cyzyk took the viewing room of the former funeral home where he lived and converted it into a microcinema (a D.I.Y. movie theater). For several years, The Mansion Theater was home to regular screenings of underground, D.I.Y., and independent films from all over the world, and became an East Coast stopping point for touring filmmakers. By 1997, the screenings had spawned MicroCineFest (MCF), a full-fledged annual film festival, which quickly distinguished itself from the few other existing underground film festivals at the time by passing on the usual subversive, transgressive, shock value fare in favor of more off-beat, oddball, substream, psychotronic, and low-budget works.

Delta Axis Presents:
“Blue Vinyl”
A Sierra Club film night
Hosted by Indie Memphis
Wednesday, April 16, 7:30 p.m.
At the Power House,
45 G.E. Patterson (between Main and Front)

When filmmaker Judith Helfand’s parents decide to replace the rotting wood siding on their suburban home with cheaper, more durable blue vinyl, Helfand embarks on a quest to find out whether it's possible "to make products that never hurt anyone at any point in their life cycle." Toting a slab of siding, Helfand travels to Lake Charles, Louisiana, the vinyl capital of the United States. What she uncovers there, and in another manufacturing center, Venice, Italy, is enough to convince even her stubborn parents to take the vinyl down. Nominated for two Emmys, the film won the 2002 Messenger of the Year Award from the Environmental Grantmakers Association.

Admission is free, donations are appreciated.
Come early to get a good seat.

Dixon Director Kevin Sharp continues his Director's Cut film festival with three great features from the 1940's.

His selections from the 1930's, The Thin Man (1934), It Happened One Night (1934), and The Holiday (1938), examined serious Depression-era issues through the lens of sophisticated comedy. As hard times gave way to war-time in the 1940s, America's social concerns changed and so did its appetite for popular entertainment. Kevin's favorite films of the 1940s focus on themes of individual responsibility, and how one person can make a difference.

He will offer a brief introduction to each film before screening. Galleries open until 8:00pm Film starts at 7:00pm

Free with museum admission.

The Oxbow Incident, 1943 Starring Henry Fonda, Dana Andrews, Harry Morgan, Jane Darwell, and Frank Conroy Directed by William Wellman A taut dark western based on the underappreciated novel by Walter Van Tilburg Clark. 75 minutes

Galleries open until 8:00pm Film starts at 7:00pm Free with museum admission. Cash bar and light refreshments. Sponsored by: Wyatt Tarrant & Combs LLP

Roberto Clemente Walker (1934-1972) remains a legendary figure in sports, in philanthropy and in the hearts of millions of Puerto Ricans and Americans. With a cannon arm and lightning speed, he was an outstanding baseball player; nevertheless, the Puerto Rico native's legend reaches beyond the diamond. A new Smithsonian traveling exhibition honors this sports hero and dedicated humanitarian. Beyond Baseball was developed by the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico with the Carimar Design and Research studio and organized for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. It is complemented by a downloadable bilingual (English and Spanish) podcast (launching in November) and an interactive Web site, children's activities, lesson plans, biographical highlights and historic photographs. The exhibition is made possible by the generous support of the Smithsonian Latino Center.

Seeger may not have exactly rocked. But his songs have been covered by rockers from The Byrds to the Boss, and he was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Early Influences category. Plus, in the rock tradition, he stood up to the Man and was eventually blacklisted from television and live appearances at the height of the McCarthy era. The film also documents his outspoken anti-war activities during the '60s and, in more recent years, his grass roots efforts to clean up the Hudson River. So rock on, Seeger. Rock on.

After plugging in at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, Bob Dylan's break with the folk scene was complete. The ensuing sonic assault caused pandemonium among the crowd, including an apoplectic Pete Seeger, and ruptured Dylan's standing among many of his longtime fans. This collection of Dylan's performances at the festival, taken over three years and filled with rare footage, charts his rapid evolution as an artist. Beginning in 1963, the film captures Dylan playing the folk and protest songs that endeared him to so many of his generation before he turned toward his more forceful rock 'n' roll sound.

As the front man of the Clash from 1977 onwards, Joe Strummer changed people's lives forever. Six years after his death, his influence reaches out around the world, more strongly now than ever before. In this film from British director Julien Temple, the musician is revealed not just as a legend or musician, but as a true communicator of our times.

Indie Memphis will present a special screening of the Big Muddy Film
Festival award-winner CONSIDERING DEMOCRACY: 8 THINGS TO ASK YOUR REPRESENTATIVE at Malco’s Studio on the Square (2105 Court Avenue) on Monday, May 19 at 7:00 pm.
Filmmaker Keya Lea Horiuchi will be in attendance to answer questions and lead the discussion.
Tickets are $5 at the door.
Have you ever wondered about what the rest of the world thinks about the United States?
More importantly, what is true about the things people say? CONSIDERING DEMOCRACY seeks to stimulate discussion and move the American debate toward finding solutions. Based on interviews and scenes from outside of the United States, each section of the film playfully explores the views with statistical comparisons. It looks at seemingly different topics while creating a tapestry of tantalizing information that
becomes interwoven and interconnected, while providing concise information and a question to further the debate.
CONSIDERING DEMOCRACY brings refreshing points of view to the political discussion, while bringing a new meaning to the term of independent filmmaking, the filmmaker having traveled across 10 countries by herself, and produced, directed, shot, and edited the film. The rest of the world is a source of intelligence that acts as a beautiful, yet pragmatic reflection of political power in the United States.

Power House Memphis Host
The Indie Memphis Micro Cinema Club #41
on Wednesday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Power House.

Indie Memphis Micro Cinema Club presents
Rural Route Film Festival Tour

Admission is free, donations are recommended
Power House Memphis, 45 G.E. Patterson, between Main & Front Streets

The Rural Route Film Festival was created to highlight works that deal with rural people and places. The festival, which showcases rural themes in an urban environment, features award-winning narrative, documentary, and experimental films as well as music videos. Based in New York City, the most urban of environments, the festival brings an alternative to the box office action flick so often set in New York or Los Angeles, or the overdone generic suburban dramedy. Previous tour dates include: Jokkmokk, Sweden, Columbia, MO, Freistadt, Austria, Chapel Hill, NC, Leiden, Holland, Anchorage, AK, Phoenix, AZ, Athens, GA, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Bozeman, MT, Albuquerque, NM, Elkader, IA, Portland, OR, London, England and Abingdon, VA.

This year’s “Rural Route Tour” program definitely leans towards the more artistic and documentary side. We’ve got fun and serious pieces from all around the world. Arctic owls in Montana, Canadian riding lawnmower races, films about light pollution, a Ukrainian poetic peasant masterpiece, dancers in the snowy Norwegian tundra, plastic lawn deer lost in Brooklyn, a man’s captivating search for his ancestors in Lithuania, and some good, ‘ol banjo playin’ at a Kentucky old folks home. Total running time is 97 minutes.

The Third Man, 1949 Starring Joseph Cotten, Orson Welles, Alida Valli, and Trevor Howard Directed by Carol Reed Based on the story by Graham Greene, who also wrote the screenplay, and expressionistic view into postwar Vienna's sinister underworld. 104 minutes Free with museum admission. Cash bar and light refreshments.

This film is director Esther Robinson's personal inquiry into the truth behind her Uncle Danny Williams' mysterious 1966 disappearance. Virtually unknown today, Williams was Andy Warhol's lover, and a promising young filmmaker. With the discovery of 20 never-before-seen films William's made during his time at the Factory, combined with Robinson's intimate interviews of surviving Factory members, the film gets beyond the icons and quietly dismantles the Warhol myth-making machine, allowing a deeper examination of the human fragility on which Andy Warhol's empire was built.

Mothers, bring your daughters! Girls of all ages will be inspired by this empowering film about four girls whose lives are transformed by the liberating power of music at Rock 'n' Roll camp. Seattle Magazine had this to say about Girls Rock: "Revolutionary, heartbreaking and laugh-out-loud funny. Absolutely not to be missed."

In the 1990s, a group of American artists emerged from the underground subcultures of skateboarding, graffiti, punk rock, and hip-hop. This documentary tells the story of how outsiders with little formal training had an incredible impact on the worlds of art, fashion, music, film, and pop culture. In a review, Film School Rejects describes Beautiful Losers as, ?More than a film about art ? it is a film about rebelling against the standard, finding your passion and making that your direction in life.? Come early for your chance to contribute to our graffiti wall!

Join Indie Memphis’ new executive director, Erik Jambor, for a special screening of some of his favorite shorts from the film festival circuit. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see what's in his head, and get a glimpse of what may be in store for the 11th annual Indie Memphis Film Festival this October 9-16.

The program will feature an eclectic mix of animation, comedy and drama, including:

THE CLIMACTIC DEATH OF DARK NINJA (13 min.) – Peter Craig's crowd-pleasing comedy about a frazzled auteur, struggling to shoot the climactic scene of his self-proclaimed martial arts masterpiece.

SCRIPT COPS (7 min.) – Scott Rice's hilariously irreverent parody about cops who arrest people for bad screenwriting.

EVERYTHING WILL BE OK (17 min.) – The latest film from Academy-award nominated animator Don Hertzfeldt (BILLY'S BALLOON, REJECTED), in which a series of dark and troubling events force Bill to reckon with the meaning of his life, or lack thereof.

And more!
