Macbeth, hailed to become king by the three witches, lusts for power and takes fate into his own hands. His wife, Lady Macbeth, whose own ambition aids in her husband's act of murder, is overwhelmed with guilt causing her to go mad. Trying to wash their hands of blood, their quick rise and tragic fall from power become self-inflicted.

Verdi's MACBETH, closely based upon Shakespeare's "Scottish play," will be presented in the context of PROJECT: MACBETH. Hattiloo Theatre will present Shakespeare's original play; Opera Memphis will present the operatic adaptation. Audiences are encouraged to explore both productions.

Opera Memphis' production will be sung in Italian with English titles.

This hip adaptation of a classic Russian tale is told by consummate storyteller David Gonzalez. Two outstanding musicians weave one of Prokofiev's classics with an original jazz-funk score, as David performs every role against a backdrop of stunning live video projections and moving images by Kandinsky. Filled with comic sparkle, The Frog Bride is a "ribbiting" coming-of-age story.

Anna, Ruth, and Peter await the arrival of their newborn child in a remarkably clever comedy which examines the sense of innocence and optimism that rises from potentially dark subject matter. Before the due date arrives, the three expecting parents make a pact to rid their crowded apartment of their three imaginary children. Hilariously startling and brilliantly funny, Vogel redefines the meaning of family and the boundaries between illusion and reality, power and subjection, friendship and love, female and male.

Based on the celebrated novel by Ernest J. Gaines, this wrenching story is an elegant but harsh illumination of the search for grace and dignity. Set in backwoods Louisiana in 1948, an innocent young black man awaits execution for the death of a white man. A plantation school teacher, who questions his own self-worth, must confront the willful convict in the hopes of saving his soul before dying. However, it is the lessons the teacher learns from the condemned man that succeed in exposing purpose in his own life.

Wacky, irreverent, and as entertaining today as it was when it first opened in 1879, Gilbert and Sullivan's classic score is suffused with a modern sensibility and rollicking good fun. Perfect for the whole family, this fresh adaptation features sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers, dewy-eyed daughters, and an eccentric Major - General, all morally bound to the often-ridiculous dictates of honor and duty. The zany antics of these beloved characters guarantee a saucy, swashbuckling good time filled with rapier wit and lush, memorable music.

Sparkling like aluminum siding, this campy, caustic musical fable is ripe with adultery, strippers, murderous ex-boyfriends, Costco, and the Ice Capades. Complete with a trashy Greek chorus of trailer park divas, Armadillo Acres is Florida's most exclusive mobile home community. But when a stripper on the run comes between an agoraphobic housewife and her tollbooth collector husband, the hurricane of laughter begins to brew. "...a wheel-spinning, mud-splattering good time of a show... the theatrical equivalent of a bag of Doritos. You can't get enough." - Talkin' Broadway.

Vaudeville and Commedia dell'arte are seamlessly woven into an uproarious fable of scheming lovers, mistaken identities, and clownish greedy servants. Balancing on a delicately taut tightrope of mischief and revenge, the crafty servant Scapin promises to help two pairs of wide-eyed lovers while juggling an array of elaborate disguises to keep their wealthy fathers from discovering the truth. Remaining true to Moliere's classic farcical tale from the seventeenth century, this fresh and side-splitting adaptation adds a late twentieth century spin to the language and hilarious non-stop action.

The spotlight shines on the world of English theatre at the moment in history when women were first allowed on the stage. When King Charles II changes the law to let women act, the most famous male portrayer of female roles on the London stage loses his livelihood, his lover, and his sense of self... until fate and his desire for revenge give him the chance to take the stage again. An intimate psycho-sexual backstage historical comedy... splendidly theatrical... a witty allusive game... - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Creator Ossie Davis claims the goal of Purlie is "intended to point a mocking finger at racial segregation and laugh it out of existence." This celebratory musical tells of the preacher Purlie Victorious Johnson, who has returned to the Southland to trick a local plantation owner into giving him the land he needs to build his church. Rousing, exuberant, and sassy tunes help speak to a desire to better oneself and surmount the obstacles presented by society that is intense, immediate, and contemporary. Filled with amazing songs, joyous laughter, and self-discovery.

In 1960 in the West End London theatre district, legendary critic Kenneth Tynan makes a startling proposal: Orson Welles should direct Laurence Olivier and the young Joan Plowright in Rhinoceros, Ionesco's absurdist masterpiece. But it is the rehearsal process that brims with absurdity and egos as titanic personalities, including Vivien Leigh, wrestle the muse in this ingenious, witty, and incisive depiction of the drama of theatre. "A highly entertaining romp through a forgotten moment in theatrical history" - Chicago Sun-Times.

Producer/director Mel Brooks took a real gamble when he adapted his 1968 cult film satire to the musical stage. The story was outrageous: flop-covered theatrical producer Max Bialystock realizes the road to his financial redemption lies in producing the worst musical ever written, raising 25,000 percent of the capital, and pocketing it all when the show is a one-night-only disaster. Aided and abetted by a nebbishy accountant named Leo Bloom, Bialystock options the rights to a "gay romp with Adolf and Eva in Berchtesgarten" called "Springtime for Hitler." Of course, if the show, by some insane stretch of credulity, were to become a hit, Bialystock and Bloom would be thrown in jail. And that's exactly what happens.

This radiant gem of a play explores the possibilities that open up in the lives of an array of women as they come into contact with a certain strand of pearls. While the pearls are stolen, bought, bestowed, unstrung, and nearly lost, their dazzling journey through generations spans thirty-five years. The lives of mothers and daughters, sisters and friends, even husbands and wives are touched in a poignant, deeply affecting story of love and loss.

Ladies get your friends together for a splendid girl's night out featuring one of romance's favorite authors, Jane Austen.( Gents, don't fret you're invited to join in for this romance classic too.) The hugely poplar novel comes to life in this refreshingly fast pace and engaging new adaptation. Finding a husband is hardly Elizabeth Bennett's most urgent priority. But with four sisters, and an overzealous matchmaking mother, and a string of unsuitable suitors, it's difficult to escape the subject. When the independent minded Elizabeth meets the handsome, enigmatic Mr. Darcy she is determined not to let her feelings triumph over her own good sense.

Steve Martin has delighted the world with his comedic performance and pen. Join us for the regional debut of The Underpants, a wild satire adapted from the classical German play about Louise and Theo Maske, a couple whose conservative existence is shattered when Louise's bloomers fall down in public. Though she pulls them up quickly, Theo thinks the incident will cost him his job as a government clerk. Louise's momentary display does not result in the feared scandal but it does attract two infatuated men, each of whom wants to rent the spare room in the Maske's home. Oblivious of their amorous objectives, Theo splits the room between them, and comedy ensues.

Sharing and participating in various cultural experiences plays a critical role in creating a harmonious living environment and enhancing mutual understanding among ethnic groups. The upcoming 2008 Chinese New Year Festival is a program that addresses such an issue.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Memphis Chinese community is excited to share and celebrate Chinese values and traditions with Memphians. In each of the last four years, the Festival has attracted more than 2,000 people from the Shelby county, West Memphis, and Northern Mississippi region. The Festival will feature Chinese Art Exhibit, live music and dance performances. In addition to local performers, we have invited some Chinese professional artists from North America.

The coming Chinese New Year is the Year of Rat. In Chinese tradition, the Chinese New Year is a very special holiday for family reunions, thanksgiving, and well-wishing. It is the most significant celebration for Chinese people around the world.

We wish you peace and prosperity in the Year of Rat.

On January 25, 2008, Rhodes College will host a symposium on "Macbeth" in conjunction with local Memphis productions of Shakespeare's play by Hattiloo Theatre and Verdi's opera by Opera Memphis.

"Shakespeare in Color: A Symposium on African-American Performances and Appropriations of 'Macbeth'" will draw together national scholars as well as local artists in a conversation about so-called 'non-traditional' casting of Shakespeare's plays.

Invited speakers include: Ayanna Thompson (Arizona State University), Peter Erickson (Williams College), Amy Scott-Douglass (Denison University), Marguerite Rippy (Marymount University), and opera scholar Wallace Cheatham. Also, we have two new speakers to add to the line-up (following Wallace Cheatham): film director Aleta Chappelle, and veteran Hollywood and Broadway actor Harry J. Lennix.

There will also be roundtable discussions with performers and directors from the Opera Memphis and Hattiloo productions.

This all-day event will present an opportunity to revisit the historical, theoretical, and practical implications of 'colorblind' casting in anticipation of attending these productions.

All lectures and discussions will take place in Blount Auditorium, Buckman Hall; the event is free and open to the public.

Please contact Scott Newstok (newstoks@rhodes.edu) for further information.

This symposium is sponsored by the Rhodes College Center for Outreach in the Development in the Arts (CODA).

Further details about the symposium will be posted on the Rhodes website as they become available: http://cal.rhodes.edu/cal_event.php?id=125997

It's 1985 and You're invited to THE WEDDING SINGER, where every night is a totally rad reception for Robbie Hart and friends, until he's left at the altar. Based on the hit film, the Tony Award nominated, THE WEDDING SINGER has been called "AWESOME! Audiences haven't had this much fun since Mamma Mia". (Jess Cagle, WCBS TV/People Magazine). THE WEDDING SINGER takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up and a wedding singer sporting a mullet might be the coolest guy in the room. Don't miss the party!

The situation comedy is, of course, not a modern invention as is clearly evidenced by Shakespeare's first work as a playwright for the London stage. . . and William stole the plot from Plautus' The Twin Menaechmi, written some 1600 years earlier. Regardless of the time, comedies based upon mistaken identity have always been audience favorites. The complications which arise in "Errors" when two sets of twins collide in ancient Ephesus are sure to please those who delight in the whimsical, frantic, and farcical upheaval which involves the entire city including its Prince. Shakespeare doesn't fail to deliver the joy and happiness one expects when the madness is resolved. Everyone is reunited and the city rejoices.

The renowned comic actor and author of Picasso at the Lapine Agile provides a wild satire adapted from the classic German play about Louise and Theo Maske, a couple whose conservative existence is shattered when Louise's bloomers fall down in public. Though she pulls them up quickly, he thinks the incident will cost him his job as a government clerk.

Louise's momentary display does not result in the feared scandal but it does attract two infatuated men, each of whom wants to rent the spare room in the Maske's home. Oblivious of their amorous objectives, Theo splits the room between them, happy to collect rent from both the foppish poet and the whiny hypochondriac.

In the Tony-Award winning new musical comedy THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning is not everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser. SPELLING BEE has been hailed by the Wall Street Journal as "perfect in every possible way, that rarity of rarities, a super-smart musical that is also a bona fide crowd pleaser." This tuneful, offbeat and at times heartwarming show offers audience members the opportunity (strictly voluntary) to become part of the action as on-stage spellers.
A diverse group of 12 men and women is empaneled to hear the case of a 16-year-old teenager accused of the murder of his abusive father in the classic drama, TWELVE ANGRY JURORS. The audience never sees the judge, nor the defendant, as the action is centered around the deliberations inside the jury room. The jury includes just about every "type" from the social spectrum. Each brings his/her own baggage to the table, and while the case hinges on a question of reasonable doubt, there are those with their own prejudices who wish to convict the accused in spite. Formation of alliances, reevaluation of testimony, changing opinions and personal revelations all play a part in the jury room drama. The interaction between the 12 men and women whose decision will cause a teenager to either be put to death or spared from execution is heated and deliberate, and the story is powerful and riveting.

Authored by playwright Reginald Rose, 12 Angry Men was originally performed on CBS Television in 1954 as part of the anthology series, Studio One. The production featured Robert Cummings, Norman Fell, Franchot Tone, Paul Hartman and Edward Arnold. Television director Sidney Lumet was recruited by actor Henry Fonda and playwright Rose to direct a theatrical release in 1957 that featured Fonda, Lee J. Cobb, Ed Begley, E.G. Marshall, Jack Warden, Martin Balsam and Jack Kulgman. Initially a box office disappointment (but a critical rave), the film has since been named by both the Library of Congress and the American Film Institute as a cultural achievement. HBO presented a newer adaptation in 1997 that included Jack Lemmon, George C. Scott, James Gandolfini, Tony Danza, Ossie Davis, Hume Cronyn and Courtney B. Vance.

Updated to 2007 in this Threshold Theater production, and including female jury members (hence the title adaptation of "Jurors"), this drama still exhibits controversy for the viewer and causes him/her to examine personal and societal prejudices.

Last year over 1150 communities hosted V-Day benefits around the world raising funds and awareness towards ending violence against women. These highly successful events raised over $6 million through performance of Eve Ensler's award-winning play, The Vagina Monologues. Hot on the heels of their success, Rhodes College has joined this global movement as part of the V-Day 2008 College Campaign.

Hailed by The New York Times as "funny" and "poignant" and by the Daily News as "intelligent" and "courageous," The Vagina Monologues, which was first performed off-Broadway by Ms. Ensler, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women's experiences.

The Vagina Monologues will open Valentine's Day, February 14th and run through Saturday, February 16th in Blount Auditorium. Tickets may be purchased at the door or reserved through e-mail at rhodesmonologues@gmail.com. An information fair will begin at 6:30 pm with the show time starting at 7:30 pm. All funds raised will benefit local women's charities.

Giaocchino Rossini Cinderella (La Cenerentola) centers on a beautiful young girl, the antics of her evil step-family, and the prince who saves her. An Opera Memphis premiere, this operatic version replaces the wicked stepmother with a bumbling stepfather. Otherwise, audiences will recognize similarities between the opera and the version made familiar by Disney. Sung in Italian with English titles.
