    Funding Historically Under Resourced Organizations and Creative Youth Development

    Since its inception, MMI has allocated over $5M to support local, grassroots arts organizations.

    Through Memphis Music Initiative’s (MMI’s) Institute for Nonprofit Excellence, in 2023:

    • $370K was granted to 8 organizations;

    • $1.5M in new funds were raised by these organizations, from 64 new funders;

    • 2200 youth were engaged by these organizations, plus an additional 2500 youth through performances;

    • 308K audience members engaged.

    MMI’s Capacity Building Program has provided $91K in pro bono professional service grants to 17 organizations; the Summer Beats program provided $44K in grants to 5 organizations, engaging 140+ youth.

  • Music Export Memphis is a nonprofit export office for Memphis music. We create opportunities for Memphis artists to showcase their music outside the city, building their careers and building our city's international reputation as a music mecca.

    Funding Individual Artists
    Music Export Memphis (MEM) has awarded more than $225,000 in tour grants to Memphis artists since the launch of its Ambassador program in 2018.

    MEM's Merch Fund, which provides micro-grants to Memphis artists to support the creation of physical merchandise (tee shirts, vinyl, etc.) with Memphis-based businesses, has granted more than $86,000 since its launch in 2021, resulting in a gross spend of over $223,000 in the local economy.

    In 2023 alone, MEM Ambassadors - a total of 80 funded artists or bands - performed shows in more than 275 cities around the world, including 97 international gigs.

    MEM’s Compensation Study in 2022 revealed the need for higher and consistent pay for musicians.

    • 80% of artists of color reported playing one or more uncompensated gigs compared to 57% of all artists.

    • Per gig pay averages $100 – a rate that has been stagnant for 30+ years.

    When MEM surveyed audiences for its 2023 Compensation Study, they reported a willingness to pay more than the current average cover charge for local, live music - indicating there may be more willingness to accept increased cost when those dollars are passed on to the artists.

    When you pay an artist, imagine you are paying for a percentage of…

    • Education: primary & secondary, higher ed or conservatory, private lessons

    • Hundreds of hours of practice

    • Rehearsal with a band or company

    • Songwriting, composing, choreography, scripts, set and lighting design

    • Recording, videography

    • Smaller/early career gigs and performances honing the craft

    • Load-in, set up and soundcheck

    • Actual time of the performance
